Exploring the World of White Wines While Chardonnay is a renowned white grape variety, the world of white wine is abundant with other fascinating grapes, each with its unique history and characteristics. Let’s explore the stories of five exceptional white grapes and their journey through time. Sauvignon Blanc Sauvignon Blanc is believed to have originated in the Bordeaux region of France, with historical records dating back to the 18th century. Its name is derived from the French words “sauvage” (wild) and “blanc” (white), reflecting its wild, untamed nature. In the 19th century, Sauvignon Blanc found a new home in the Loire Valley, where it gained fame in the regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Known for its high acidity and vibrant aromatics, Sauvignon Blanc often exhibits flavors of green apple, lime, and passion fruit, along with herbal notes like freshly cut grass or bell pepper. Today, Sauvignon Blanc is grown worldwide, thriving in regions such as New Zealand’s Marlborough, California’s Napa Valley, and Chile’s Casablanca Valley. The crisp acidity of Sauvignon Blanc makes it an excellent match for goat cheese, seafood, salads, and dishes with herbal elements. Riesling Riesling’s roots are in the Rhine region of Germany, and the earliest documentation of the grape dates back to 1435. It quickly became the backbone of German viticulture, renowned for its ability to reflect the terroir in which it was grown. In the 19th century, Riesling was highly prized and commanded high prices, often rivaling top Bordeaux wines. Riesling is highly aromatic, with flavors ranging from green apple and pear to apricot and honey. It can produce wines from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, often with a distinctive minerality and petrol note as they age. Germany remains the heartland of Riesling, but it also flourishes in Alsace (France), Australia’s Clare and Eden Valleys, and…

Cigar Review:  The Statesman Brand: Statesman Cigar Co Vitola: 5 3/8” x 52 Perfecto Filler: Nicaragua Wrapper: Nicaragua Binder: Nicaragua Smoking Time: 46 min Body: Medium Flavor: Medium to Medium + Price: $15 What Makes it Special: The Statesman is the flagship cigar for Tommy and the rest of his team at Statesman Cigar Company.  Formed during the tumultuous years we now know as the pandemic, Tommy Allen, CEO, and his friends, or rather, brothers Joel Murphy and Jaycee Estrada, came together to form Statesman Cigar company.  A value-driven brand, as shown in the quality of their products and their core values. Visual/Pre-light Draw: This perfecto comes in with what can be described as a slightly closed foot, where the wrapper comes down around the tapering, leaving a glimpse of what is to come in the filler. A wrapper with a crisp, light sheen of oils and very little toothing, along with aromas of hay and woodsy notes. First Third: The initial light always takes a little bit more care or caressing for these types of vitolas to ensure a nice, even light with minimal charring of the wrapper. Immediately, I noticed the hay with hints of cedar on the initial draw, while notes of cream came across the palate, backed by white pepper on the retro. The burn line was even, and a nice burn cone was beginning to form, allowing for a pleasant medium viscosity of smoke in the body. Second Third: Transitioning into the second third, the construction quality of the smoke shone through as the burn stayed consistent. While there was a slight canoeing, it quickly corrected itself, and this is common with this type of vitola. Notes of musky hay started to come into presence as I got towards the middle of the cigar with…

Cigar Accessory Review: Upallant Dual Flame Tabletop Lighter w/V-Cut Today, we’re reviewing the Upallant Dual Flame Tabletop Lighter with V-Cutter, available on Amazon. While the manufacturer provided this unit for review, they have no control over the content or outcome, and no specific talking points or expectations were given. The lighter is an attractive piece, featuring a dark faux woodgrain body with black metallic hardware. The woodgrain appears to mimic Macassar, an excellent choice for a sophisticated look. The lighter’s generous size allows it to hold a substantial amount of fluid, sufficient for several smoking sessions. Photographing the flame can be challenging, but it features a dual jet torch design with flames that converge at a single point, making it effective for both lighting and precise touch-ups. Keep in mind that the entire flame isn’t visible in the dark, so ensure the visible flame never touches your cigar directly. The V-cutter is efficient and quite deep, reminiscent of the Colibri V-cutters, unlike the shallower Xikar or Lotus versions. The lighter’s case includes a pass-through beneath the cutter, simplifying the process of tapping out trimmings. Additionally, it doesn’t retain any residue after use. Overall, the Upallant lighter is a solid option from Amazon, particularly if you don’t have access to a larger brand locally. It lacks a warranty beyond Amazon’s standard return policy, but it’s reasonably priced at just under $26. With a 20% off code (QCEKSMSJ), the price drops to around $21. After a month of use, I rate it an 88 out of 100. It’s not the best I’ve ever used, but it offers good value for its price and is a practical choice, especially if you’re prone to misplacing  lighters. FDA, Coffee, and Gas Stations Recently, Snapchill Coffee out of Wisconsin has recalled over 140 different brands of coffee they produced. The company was forced to do so after the FDA notified them that the way they canned could produce deadly neurotoxins. According to the Hill, there has been no reported sickness, and the coffees affected are not like Folgers or Maxwell House, more like canned coffee you find in a gas station, something like the Starbucks Frappuccino drinks in a glass bottle or the Black Rifle Coffee Company 300 Coffee drinks. Most of the brands seem regional to the Midwest/ Northwest. What does that mean for you and me? First, let’s talk about RTDs’ place in the market. People buy them as an easy in and out when they’re in a rush and do not have time to wait for a barista to make a drink. They are typically shelf stable, which means if you are on a long shift, you can have it for later when you cannot leave your job. So basically, it boils down to convenience. It is also a better option than an energy drink or nicotine pouches, both popular options for people who work long shifts, like first responders or people in trades that work offshore or in an oilfield. Who else does this? It’s common for companies to outsource the manufacturing of RTD products. Starbucks was a pioneer in this field, starting in the early 2000s, and was followed by Monster and others. Knowing this is essential because these brands that use Snapchill aren’t trying to lie to their customers; they are following standard industry practices that everyone follows. What will people do now that a few options are gone? This will drive people to more prominent brands as a safe bet. So…

Cigar Review: Timeless TAA Limited Edition 2023 Brand: Ferio Tego Timeless Vitola: Toro Filler: Nicaragua Jalapa Wrapper: Nicaragua Estelí Binder: Nicaragua Estelí Smoking Time: 1.5 Hours Body:  Medium Flavor: Full Intensity Price: $16 What Makes it Special: The Tobacconists Association of America (TAA) each year presents the TAA Exclusive Series. Michael Herklots, founder of Ferio Tego Cigars, began with his first TAA Exclusive from the Timeless brand in 2020.  This year, 2023, is the third offering of the exclusive series. It features the same blend as the previous offerings, with fillers from the Jalapa region, better known for wrappers. Michael describes this as a “bit of an inside-out blend,” further stating that the “Jalapa filer provides fortitude but with grace.” The cigar is made entirely from Plasencia tobaccos and rolled in their Nicaraguan factory. Visual/Pre-light Draw: The dark Maduro wrapper, with black and gold bands, shows the cigar’s elegance and exclusiveness, synonymous with the letters TAA. With a smooth texture, the wrapper reveals only a few veins and a slight glistening of oils. The cigar showed an even distribution of tobacco in the foot and firmness along the body. Finally, the pre-light aroma was filled with cocoa and deep forest notes, whereas the cold draw was creamy chocolate, building the anticipation of what was yet to come. First Third: Upon first light, the area was filled with aromas of cocoa and cooking spices, and the experience was pleasant and enticing.  The initial draw presented rich gamy mushrooms and hints of toasted nuts and finished with a sweet peppercorn that transitioned from the tail end into the retro-hale. Second Third: Into the second third, a small canoe started forming that required touching-up. The aroma started filling with more intense cooking spices, that of cardamon and rosemary. The notes on the palate…

Kicking Horse Coffee–Expect the Unexpected Did you ever ride a rollercoaster you had to do again to comprehend what you just did? Well, that is what it is like to drink Kicking Horse Three Sisters. It is strange to say or think that the same coffee brewed in two different ways can be so different, but that was my experience here. On the front, there is everything a nerd would love about Kicking Horse Three sisters. It is Fairtrade, medium roast, and claims to be seductive. Well, you should read a bit more and see if you agree. In a Pour-over, the Three Sisters could only be described as pure blue-collar workers and diesel fuel—the thing that powers America. It is power and intensity in a cup. On the nose, I was primed for Hazelnut. Its appearance was like an oil slick. It tasted like dark chocolate and orange zest and finished ashy, like the dusty bitter taste you would imagine from a puff of ash from a campfire that hit your face because a wind blew it onto you. This cup of coffee was intense, and I would only recommend one cup. It is enough. Overall, it felt like a kicking horse. As for the French Press, I found that the transformation was mind-boggling. It changed from an SRT hellcat to a purebred Arabian racehorse. The nose was mellower and milder and had more of a hint of sugar sweetness. It smelt like walking past someone who had just poured sugar into a cake batter. The cup’s appearance was similar to a pour-over, with more oils and a twinge of brownish tint, but it still maintained a mirror reflection. The taste was Dark chocolate, with the orange zest replaced with lime zest, and the ash notes were more subtle.…
