Visual/Prelight Draw: The Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper of the Las Calaveras Décimo Aniversario is slightly darker than milk chocolate, with a bit of mottling and tooth, rough to the touch, oily, and an expertly applied triple cap. Despite a few visible veins, the cigar exudes sophistication and luxury. The wrapper emits a singular barnyard aroma, which, while simple to the uninitiated, excites aficionados. The foot adds sweet tobacco, figs, and a funky, earthy note. The cold draw reveals baking spices, barnyard, nuts, and earthy funk from the foot, with a subtle underlying sweetness, making for an intriguing and complex profile. First Third: In the first third of the Las Calaveras Décimo Aniversario, rich notes of chocolate, caramel, wood, leather, earth, and red pepper flake emerge as the initial light fades. 10 Surprising Uses of Tobacco Around Your Home and Garden Tobacco has been around for centuries, and while it’s most commonly approached in the form of smoking cigars around here, it has many other surprising uses, especially around your home and garden. Let’s dive into ten unexpected ways you can use tobacco that you might not have known about! 1. Natural Insect Repellent Tobacco can be a powerful natural insect repellent. The nicotine in tobacco is toxic to many insects, making it a great way to keep pests out of your garden without using harsh chemicals. To make your own insect repellent, you can steep tobacco leaves in water for about 24 hours, creating a strong tea. Once the mixture is ready, strain out the leaves and pour the tobacco tea into a spray bottle. Spraying this mixture on your plants can help keep away common garden pests like aphids, caterpillars, and beetles. The tobacco tea works by disrupting the nervous systems of these insects, making your garden a much less attractive place for them to hang out. Plus, it’s all-natural, so you don’t have to worry about harming your plants or introducing harmful chemicals into your garden. http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/insects/tobacco-juice-pesticide.htm 2. Homemade Pesticide If you’re dealing with a serious insect problem, tobacco can be used to make a stronger, homemade pesticide. Like the insect repellent, this pesticide is made by steeping tobacco leaves in water. However, for a pesticide, the mixture is made more potent by letting the tobacco steep for a longer period, usually 2-3 days. After straining the leaves, you can add a few drops of dish soap to the mixture to help it stick to the plants better. This homemade pesticide is effective against a wide range of insects, including aphids, whiteflies, and even slugs. When sprayed on…

Cigar Accessory Review: Upallant Dual Flame Tabletop Lighter w/V-Cut Today, we’re reviewing the Upallant Dual Flame Tabletop Lighter with V-Cutter, available on Amazon. While the manufacturer provided this unit for review, they have no control over the content or outcome, and no specific talking points or expectations were given. The lighter is an attractive piece, featuring a dark faux woodgrain body with black metallic hardware. The woodgrain appears to mimic Macassar, an excellent choice for a sophisticated look. The lighter’s generous size allows it to hold a substantial amount of fluid, sufficient for several smoking sessions. Photographing the flame can be challenging, but it features a dual jet torch design with flames that converge at a single point, making it effective for both lighting and precise touch-ups. Keep in mind that the entire flame isn’t visible in the dark, so ensure the visible flame never touches your cigar directly. The V-cutter is efficient and quite deep, reminiscent of the Colibri V-cutters, unlike the shallower Xikar or Lotus versions. The lighter’s case includes a pass-through beneath the cutter, simplifying the process of tapping out trimmings. Additionally, it doesn’t retain any residue after use. Overall, the Upallant lighter is a solid option from Amazon, particularly if you don’t have access to a larger brand locally. It lacks a warranty beyond Amazon’s standard return policy, but it’s reasonably priced at just under $26. With a 20% off code (QCEKSMSJ), the price drops to around $21. After a month of use, I rate it an 88 out of 100. It’s not the best I’ve ever used, but it offers good value for its price and is a practical choice, especially if you’re prone to misplacing  lighters. Memorial Day Cocktail: River Whiskey Long Grog The grog cocktail has a storied history that dates back to the 18th century, originating within the British Royal Navy. The term “grog” is believed to have been coined around 1740 by British Admiral Edward Vernon, who was known as “Old Grog” because of the grogram cloak he often wore. Admiral Vernon mandated that the sailors’ daily rum ration be diluted with water to reduce drunkenness and improve discipline. This mixture was called “grog” in his honor. Initially, the grog consisted of water and rum, but sailors soon began adding lime or lemon juice to the concoction. This not only improved the taste but also had the crucial benefit of preventing scurvy, a common and deadly disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. The addition of citrus thus marked a significant turning point, intertwining the grog cocktail with naval tradition and crucial maritime health practices. Sugar and spices were sometimes added as the drink evolved, further enhancing its flavor and appeal. The grog became more than a mere naval ration; it symbolized camaraderie and resilience among sailors. When naval officers and seamen returned to civilian life, they brought the grog, introducing it to a broader audience. The grog’s influence extended far beyond the British Navy. It spread to the American colonies and the Caribbean, where local variations emerged, often incorporating regional ingredients. This global spread of the grog, with each region adding its unique twist, is a fascinating testament to its enduring popularity and adaptability. Today, grog is still enjoyed in various forms worldwide, often as a nostalgic nod to its nautical origins. Whether sipped on a warm beach or crafted into a sophisticated modern cocktail, grog remains a testament to its enduring legacy, celebrating a rich history of exploration, adaptation, and the enduring…

Cigar Review – Metallica S84 Shade to Black by Drew Estates Brand: Drew Estates Vitola: Robusto 5 x 50 Filler: Nicaraguan Maduro and Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro Wrapper: Connecticut ShadeBinder: Connecticut River Valley Maduro Smoking Time:  49 minutes Body: Medium Flavor: Medium Price: $11.99 What Makes it Special: Jonathan Drew, Founder and President of Drew Estate exclaims, “I just walked inside our humidor here at headquarters and viewed the new white Blackened box sitting alongside the original black Maduro. All I can say is ‘WOW!!’ It’s so in your face, I love it. The new S84 Shade to Black is a must-try for any Connecticut Shade smoker. It’s like a deep, dark, rich Connecticut that’s smooth as silky velvet, plush with triple plushness. Rob Dietrich, Blackened’s Master Distiller, has been one of my best friends for almost 15 years. He brought Hetfield into the mix and I brought Willy and the DE brand team. This project is dope. We’re having fun with it.” I couldn’t have said it better, so I queued up some Ride the Lightening (1984’s release) and away we go: Visual/Prelight Draw: A very smooth almost but not quite oily shade wrapper gives nothing much but partially green drying hay and some honey, but a sniff at the foot gives a dark oily earth belying the rollercoaster ride we’re about to go on. First Third: My first puffs after an easy light give hay, white pepper, and the mild but dark fruity sweetness of dates. The latter comes from all that Maduro, with spice leftover from the broad leaves. The ash holds quite well here up to an inch with no problem. Getting well into the first third the retro hale adds some saltiness and coffee notes. Second Third: Moving into the middle third the white pepper…

Cigar Humidification – Separating Opinion from Science I’ve been challenged to do a piece on cigar Humidification and help us all separate facts, opinions, superstitions, and bad habits from each other. Bring your comments over to our Discord for further discussion: https://discord.gg/EYQ5UVYS  . I’m sure I’ll see a few there after this! Humidity – What is it? The full term that we’ll be looking at is relative humidity, typically expressed as a percentage of a temperature. The reason is that this is not an absolute measure, which would require much more accurate tools to read. So, as temperature changes, the humidity will change relative to the temperature. The chart below will show us some general information, including where mold growth will begin and where you’ll see condensation on surfaces, usually windows, first if your humidor has them. So what is our goal with humidifying cigars? We are attempting to create a microenvironment that most closely resembles the tropical environments where tobacco is processed, aged, and rolled into cigars. The most general rule of thumb is to keep this environment as close to 68%rh and 68*F. We will discuss later why that is and possible exceptions or modifications to this rule, but it is the general best practice. So how do we create that environment? First, we’re looking for a stable environment. Ideally, a spot for your humidor that won’t be receiving direct sunlight, and won’t be directly under an aircon vent or above a floor vent. Best in an internal wall corner. The next thing we need to address is temperature. If you have mini splits and can comfortably keep that room at 68 degrees I envy you, sir! For the rest of us using a portable temperature gauge placing it in that spot and monitoring it a…

Cigar Review – Joya de Nicaragua Cinco Cinco (55th Anniversary) Brand: Joya de Nicaragua Vitola: Toro 6 x 52 Filler: Nicaragua Wrapper: Mexican San Andres Binder: Nicaraguan Smoking Time:  1 hour Body: Medium Flavor: Medium to Full Price: $20.00 What Makes it Special: From the company, “This cigar was made with the people, by the people, and for the people,” said Juan Ignacio Martinez, executive VP of Joya. “Our past is all about tobacco. Our bright future is all about tobacco. We are here, stronger than ever, thanks to our wonderful community of amigos.” The blend is made with tobacco considered “ultra-vintage” and includes a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, along with binder and fillers from Nicaragua. It is rated as a full-bodied and medium-strength cigar with a complex profile, receiving a five-out-of-five rating. Let’s smoke it and see where it takes us! Visual/Prelight Draw: The wrapper of the cigar resembles a milk chocolate bar, with a dark brown and slightly oily appearance. There are no visible veins or blemishes, making it look ultra-premium, but only trying it will confirm its quality. The prelight draw hints at flavors of earth, coffee, tobacco, and cedar. It has a single green band, which appears almost emerald on the back side of the label, with an inscription on the inside of the band alluding to the quote above. First Third: Upon lighting the cigar, you will first taste the sweet, green wheatgrass with underlying earthy notes. As the ash begins to form, you will notice a hint of spice at the top note. The burn of the cigar is razor sharp, and lighting it was quite easy. Second Third: The second third remains much the same but with the spice ratcheting up near the halfway point. Ashing the cigar produces a fine ligero cone, indicating…
